Why does skin tone matter at all?
Because the laser does not see “hair”. It sees pigment. The energy is drawn to melanin, and the treatment works by the hair’s pigment absorbing that energy down at the root. The more contrast between dark hair and lighter skin, the more cleanly the energy goes where it should. Less contrast means the settings have to be chosen much more carefully, so the skin itself does not absorb energy meant for the hair.
How is suitability assessed?
Often yes, with the right settings, longer spacing and honest expectations, and this is exactly why assessment comes first rather than after. Deeper skin tones carry more melanin in the skin itself, so the margin for error is smaller: settings that are casual about this can leave irritation or pigment changes. What we do differently is assess tone in person, start conservatively, and use a test patch where there is any doubt.
Which hair colours respond poorly?
Very light blonde, grey, white and red hair, regardless of skin tone. These carry little or none of the pigment the laser targets, so there is not much for the energy to act on. We would rather tell you this at a consultation than let you pay for sessions that physics is quietly working against.
Does tanning change the answer?
Yes, and temporarily. Recently tanned skin has more surface pigment, which narrows the safe settings. Sometimes the honest call is to wait several weeks before starting or resuming. This is why the area should stay out of strong sun through your course, and why we may postpone a session after a sun-heavy vacation. Postponing is not upselling caution; it is the difference between treating hair and stressing skin.
The part that has to happen in person.
Your exact combination (tone, hair colour, density, area) and what it means for settings and the number of sessions. That is an in-person look and conversation, not a quiz online. The consultation is $75, credited to any treatment you complete within 30 days, and “this is not the right tool for you” is a real possible answer.
